The Monopoly
80%
One company — Collectors Universe — controls 80% of the sports card grading market. They own PSA, SGC, and Beckett. The only major independent grader remaining is CGC at roughly 18%.
But Collectors doesn't just grade cards. They also own Card Ladder (pricing data), the PSA Population Report, PCGS (coins), and Wata (video games). They grade the assets AND control how the values are presented to buyers and sellers.
- PSA — 55% market share (Collectors-owned)
- Beckett / BGS — 13% market share (Collectors-owned, acquired December 2025)
- SGC — 12% market share (Collectors-owned, acquired February 2024)
- CGC — 18% market share (Independent)
- Other — 2% market share
The Evidence: Same Card, Different Grade
"Crack and resubmit" is not a collector strategy. It is a symptom of a broken system. When the accepted practice in an industry is to pay for a professional assessment, reject the result, and pay again hoping for a different answer — that is not grading. That is gambling.
The same card, submitted twice, routinely receives different grades. Not borderline cases — full grade swings. PSA 8 to PSA 10. The difference between an $800 card and a $3,200 card determined not by the condition of the cardboard, but by which grader looked at it on which day.
PSA Professor — one of the most visible figures in the PSA ecosystem — publicly claims a 96%+ gem rate. The public average is approximately 55%. His own description: "It's like picking winning lottery tickets before you scratch them."
Our Five Demands
Demand I: Published, Measurable Standards
Centering tolerances. Surface criteria. Edge specifications. Corner thresholds. Every other valuation industry publishes its methodology. GIA grades diamonds with measurable, reproducible criteria. Appraisers follow USPAP standards. Auditors follow GAAP. PSA must publish the specific, measurable criteria for every grade level.
Demand II: Multiple Graders or Independent Verification
One person's unchecked opinion should not determine thousands of dollars in value. Real estate appraisals can be challenged. Financial audits require independent review. For any card valued above a reasonable threshold, PSA must implement either multi-grader consensus or an independent verification process.
Demand III: Subgrades or Written Explanations
Centering. Corners. Edges. Surface. BGS has offered subgrade breakdowns for over two decades. SGC offers them. CGC offers them. A BGS 9.5 with a centering subgrade of 8 tells the collector exactly what happened. A PSA 9 tells them nothing.
Demand IV: Consistency Guarantees
If the same card receives different grades on different days from different graders, the system is producing random output — not professional assessment. Crack-and-resubmit is not a collector hack. It is a survival strategy in a broken system. The same card, evaluated against the same published standards, must receive the same grade.
Demand V: Genuine Market Competition
Collectors Universe acquired SGC in February 2024. SGC submissions dropped from 158,000 to 35,000 per month. Collectors acquired Beckett in December 2025. One company now controls three of the four major grading services and the dominant pricing data platform.
About That Name
Professional — There is nothing professional about inconsistency. When collectors budget for cracking and resubmitting as a standard business practice, the process has failed. Professional means delivering the same result every time. PSA delivers a dice roll sealed in plastic.
Grading — Grading requires standards. Published criteria. Measurable benchmarks that can be independently verified. PSA has none. They have opinions sealed in plastic. That is not grading. That is guessing with a label on it.
PSA Chance. That's what the name should be. Because that's what the service delivers. Not a grade. A chance.
The Ask
We are not asking for perfection. We are asking for the same level of accountability that exists in every other industry where professionals assign value to assets. Published standards. Independent verification. Transparency in methodology. Genuine competition.
Change your standards or change your name.
Signed, Collectors who are done paying monopoly prices for lottery tickets.
